THE PROS AND CONS OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

Since their introduction on the commercial market, lithium ion batteries has been the most popular choice for rechargeable battery for around two decades. Nickel cadmium was the norm before lithium ion batteries arrived on the market. Lithium ion has twice the energy density as nickel cadmium making it a more powerful choice for a battery.

ADVANTAGES OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

These benefits of lithium ion batteries are why they are used in everything, from laptops to mobile devices.

High energy density: The energy density of lithium ion is twice that of nickel cadmium. This makes it more durable than other types of battery. It would take up to three times as many nickel cadmium batteries to provide the same power output as one lithium-ion battery. This is crucial for devices such as smartphones, laptops and power tools, and electric vehicles. A battery should be able to last for a long period of time before it needs to be recharged.

Low maintenance: Lithium-ion batteries are low-maintenance. They don't need to be cycled or have any memory. You can avoid the need to periodically discharge batteries or top up battery fluid. They are also easy to use because there is no priming required.

Low self-discharge rates: Lithium ion batteries have a lower self-discharge than other rechargeable batteries. After the battery is charged, you might notice a drop of 4 to 5 percent. However, the self-discharge rates drops to 1 to 2 percentage per month.

Many types: Lithium ion batteries come in a variety of sizes and types. This makes them more convenient for different applications. For example, your smartphone's rechargeable battery will have different power requirements than your car's battery.

DISADVANTAGES OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

Protection is required: Lithium ion batteries have the biggest drawback of being completely charged and fully discharged. This can be done by adding protection circuitry to the battery or the device that limits the charge and discharge functions so they remain at their optimal levels.

Ageing: The average lithium-ion battery can only survive between 500 to 1,000 discharge cycles before it dies. Technology is improving. This limits their life expectancy and can impact how long a device can last if it is integrated, such as in smartphones today.

Costlier: Lithium ion is about 40% more expensive than nickel cadmium, which can make it prohibitive for certain applications.
